Annual Open Source Wireless Networking Competition Challenges Leading Students and Industry Experts
SANTA CLARA, CA, April 21, 2016 –The prpl Foundation, an open-source non-profit foundation focused on enabling next-generation datacenter-to-device portable software and virtualized architectures, today announced its sponsorship of the annual Wireless Battle of the Mesh (commonly referred to as ‘BattleMesh’) event, to be held May 1-7 in Porto, Portugal.
Open source programmers from around the world are gearing up for one of the biggest challenges in wireless networking. The event challenges emerging developers to overcome significant obstacles to put forth their best efforts at creating an open source wireless mesh.
“This year’s competition promises to be especially challenging,” said Filipe Borges Teixeira, chair of the University of Portugal’s Center for Telecommunications and Multimedia and chief planner of the 2016 BattleMesh event.
“We will spread dozens of access points across the university’s buildings to create a mesh network using several different open source solutions,” said Teixeira. “Each team will be given a routing protocol based on the same hardware and OpenWrt operating system, and all the teams must use their testing skills to optimize their solutions for maximum performance.”
Teixeira added that a comprehensive talk-and-workshops agenda will promote discussion of their findings, and education opportunities that include the latest developments in mesh networking, device security and regulatory environments.
